X(yz+1): We’ve all heard them… the little lies, the big lies, the promises that sound good until the truth comes knocking. From broken hearts to crooked deals and empty political promises, eventually there comes a moment when enough is enough. This is what happens when you’ve heard one too many lies.
ONE TOO MANY LIES:
You said forever with your hand in mine,
Swore every word was the gospel kind,
But truth has a way of slipping through,
When the promises don’t match what you do.
I watched that smile, I heard that tone,
Felt the distance growing in our home,
You can fool a heart for a little while,
But you can’t hide forever behind that smile.
There’s a line somewhere you shouldn’t cross,
A final straw, a final cost…
One too many lies, one too many times,
One too many promises dressed up as alibis.
You can twist the truth, you can paint it pretty,
You can sell your story all over the city,
But sooner or later, the truth arrives
And tonight you told me
One too many lies.
There’s a man in a suit with a silver tongue,
Selling dreams to the old and the young,
Says, “Trust me, folks, I’ll make things right,”
Then disappears when the cameras turn off at night.
There’s a company counting every dime,
Moving numbers around to make the bottom line,
They call it business, I call it shame,
Funny how the crooked always change their name.
They build their castles on shifting ground,
Till somebody finally tears them down…
One too many lies, one too many times,
One too many promises dressed up as alibis.
You can shake your hand, you can kiss that baby,
You can call yourself a patriot, a saint or maybe
The best damn leader that money can buy
But sooner or later, the truth arrives,
And you’ve told us
One too many lies.
I’ve heard “I’m sorry” a thousand times,
Heard “it wasn’t me” and “I crossed no line.”
I’ve watched good people swallow their pride,
While the ones doing wrong just keep getting by.
But there’s something different in the air tonight,
Something waking up in the dead of the night.
You can push somebody down for only so long,
Before they stand back up and say,
“Boy, you’ve been wrong.”
Truth don’t need a lawyer,
Truth don’t need a spin.
Truth don’t need a dollar
To tell you where you’ve been.
And every lie you bury
Leaves another mark behind…
Till the weight of every false word
Comes crashing down the line.
One too many lies!
One too many times!
One too many broken promises
Wrapped up in pretty lines!
You can buy the headlines,
You can buy the crowd,
You can talk real big
And you can talk real loud,
But you can’t buy the truth
And you can’t outrun the night!
One too many lies!
That’s one too many!
One too many lies!
And I’ve finally had plenty!
You had your chances…
You had your time…
You should’ve stopped
Before you crossed that line…
One too many lies…
One too many lies…
