Working On Something

X(yz+1): Doing nothing isn’t neutral. Sitting on the couch is still training your body for sitting. Avoiding a difficult conversation is still strengthening avoidance. But the reverse is also true: taking a walk, writing one paragraph, making one phone call, practicing an instrument for twenty minutes… you’re building something.

WORKING ON SOMETHING:

Every morning lays a hammer in your hand,
Whether you swing it or you don’t.
You can build yourself a road out of this town,
Or get comfortable saying that you won’t.
Every choice leaves something standing,
Every habit lays another stone,
You can spend your days becoming who you want
Or get damn good at leaving life alone.

There ain’t really such a thing as standing still,
Time keeps working even when you never will.

Every day you’re working on something,
Even if that something is nothing.
You’re building up, you’re wearing down,
You’re planting roots or losing ground.
Every yes, every no, every “maybe someday,”
Is shaping who you’ll be somewhere down the way.
Every day you’re working on something
Even if that something…
Is nothing.

That old guitar collecting dust there in the corner,
Those walking shoes you swore you’d wear,
That call you meant to make about a month ago,
That dream you keep pretending isn’t there.
You don’t need to change your whole life Monday,
You don’t need some lightning from above,
Sometimes moving one damn inch in the right direction
Is enough to prove you’re not giving up.

‘Cause there ain’t really such a thing as standing still,
You’re becoming something whether or not you will.

Every day you’re working on something,
Even if that something is nothing.
You’re building up, you’re wearing down,
You’re planting roots or losing ground.
Every yes, every no, every “maybe someday,”
Is shaping who you’ll be somewhere down the way.
Every day you’re working on something
Even if that something…
Is nothing.

Maybe yesterday you wasted.
Maybe ten years slipped away.
Don’t waste another ten years
Trying to get back yesterday.
You don’t owe the past an answer.
You don’t need to make things right.
Just pick one thing worth building
And put your hands on it tonight.

One mile.
One page.
One call.
One change.
One promise you finally keep.
One step.
One scar.
One shot.
One start.
That’s how a life gets built underneath your feet.

Every day you’re working on something,
Even if that something is nothing.
You’re building strength, you’re building doubt,
You’re building something either way around.
Every yes, every no, every “not today,”
Is shaping who you’ll be somewhere down the way.
So if every day I’m working on something
I’m gonna make that something
worth something.

Yeah, time keeps working…
So I might as well work too.
