X(yz+1): Change is possible even when we can’t see it. But just sitting and waiting for change isn’t enough. Three kings and their armies got stranded in the desert without water while marching to war. Facing disaster, they turned to the prophet Elisha for help. He told them to start digging trenches to hold the water…

FIRST YOU DIG THE TRENCHES:

They’d been walking through the desert,
Nothing but dust beneath their feet,
Empty cups and tired horses,
And miles of unforgiving heat.
Not a cloud along the skyline,
Not a promise in the air,
Then somebody said, “Start digging,”
Like the water was already there.

Sometimes faith ain’t what you’re seeing,
Sometimes faith is what you do,
When everything around you says
There’s nothing coming through.

First you dig the trenches,
Though there’s not a cloud in sight,
Put your hands into the hard ground,
Trust there’s something worth the fight.
You can’t wait until the rain comes
To make a place for hope to live,
Believing isn’t wishing
You’ve gotta work for what you give.
When the sky above looks empty,
And you don’t know what comes next
First you dig the trenches,
Then you take another step.

Maybe love has turned to silence,
And you’re sleeping back to back,
Maybe every conversation
Ends up dragging through the past.
You can count the ways you’re hurting,
You can keep a list of wrongs,
Or start digging toward each other
Before everything is gone.

Maybe work has left you weary,
Maybe money’s running thin,
You can stare at every closed door,
Or start knocking once again.
You may not control tomorrow,
But there’s something you control
What you choose to do this morning,
And the story that you hold.

‘Cause hope ain’t sitting there pretending
That the hard times aren’t real,
It’s doing what you can today
For the life you want to feel.

First you dig the trenches,
Though there’s not a cloud in sight,
Put your hands into the hard ground,
Trust there’s something worth the fight.
You can’t wait until the rain comes
To make a place for hope to live,
Believing isn’t wishing
You’ve gotta work for what you give.
When the sky above looks empty,
And you don’t know what comes next
First you dig the trenches,
Then you take another step.

There’s a voice inside that tells you
Nothing good will ever last,
It remembers every failure,
Every shadow from your past.
If you listen long enough to it,
It’ll make a prison of your mind,
Till the good that’s all around you
Is the hardest thing to find.

So count the things still standing,
Not just everything you’ve lost,
See the people who still love you,
See the bridges you can cross.
You don’t have to see the ending,
You don’t need to know the way
Just make a little room for better,
And do the work today.

Don’t wait to feel courageous
Before you face your fear.
Don’t wait until you’re certain
Before you start from here.
Don’t wait to see the water
Before you make a place
Sometimes you swing the shovel
And call that little act your faith.

Dig when you’re tired.

Dig when you doubt.

Dig when that old voice tells you
There ain’t no way out.

You can’t command the heavens,
You can’t tell the rain to fall,
But you can prepare the ground beneath you
And sometimes that’s your call.

First you dig the trenches,
Though there’s not a cloud in sight,
Put your hands into the hard ground,
And give tomorrow somewhere to arrive.
You can’t wait until the rain comes
To make a place for hope to live,
Believing isn’t wishing
It’s believing while you dig.

When the sky above looks empty,
When you’ve given all you’ve got,
Keep making room for something better
Even when you see it not.
You don’t need to know the ending,
You just need to start with this

First you dig the trenches…
First you dig the trenches…
First you dig.

There wasn’t a cloud in sight…

But they dug them anyway.
